What does a woman need to be able to say, "This is the life I have chosen," and for that choice to be truly free?
Perhaps emancipation begins precisely there: when a woman stops asking what place belongs to her and starts asking what life she wants to build. Tristana said it over a century ago with a simplicity that still resonates: "I want to live and be free." (Benito Pérez Galdós, *Tristana*, 1892, Ch. V).
