Description
Carnival has long been a defining expression of the identity of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, and Salsipuedes brings its deepest roots to life by staging the medieval episode of Don Carnal and Doña Cuaresma, inspired by The Book of Good Love by the Archpriest of Hita. Presented as street theatre, the piece revisits the historical tension between festivity and religious discipline — a contrast that shaped everyday life in the Canary Islands until the 1970s, when Carnival defied censorship and Lent imposed strict social norms. The arrival of both armies, their throne‑carriages and the lively uproar of their followers create a colourful, joyful and engaging performance. A staging that reconnects today’s Carnival with its cultural origins, enriching the city’s collective identity and restoring the historical meaning behind a tradition that remains vibrantly alive.
