Church of Santo Domingo de Guzmán
The church of Santo Domingo de Guzmán was part of the primitive Dominican convent dedicated to San Pedro Mártir. This convent was founded in 1522 by the conqueror Pedro de Vera. From the original only this beautiful church and part of the cloister remain, today in the Casa de Colón.
It is perhaps the most notable construction of the Gran Canarian Baroque, given that few renovations have been made in the last two centuries.
The layout of the church is in an East-West direction, which means that its access is on the left side or Gospel wall.
The church of Santo Domingo de Guzmán has a beautiful baroque doorway carved in 1786 in blue stone and delimited by pilasters of the same material. Belonging to the Dominican order is evident both in the emblems and in the sculpture of the Virgin of the Rosary that crowns the central niche.
